I'm kind of a quiet guy who really loves life for reasons that become quickly obvious as you listen to my music!
I grew up on the beach so I guess you could describe my music as mellow, folk-style beach ballads and stories with little bit of jazz.
I wasn't living in the midwest somewhere where I quit my nine-to-five job leaving the corporate world because I'd had enough of wearing ties and wingtip shoes and decide to learn how to play the guitar and live the rest of my life as a beach guy ... I am a beach guy, I've always been a beach guy. From Threes to Cardiff Reef to Kaisers to Pipes to K-38 to Pops ... you get the idea.
I spent most of my youth moving back and forth from Encinitas (North County San Diego) to Waikiki (Hawaii) and back again ... so surfing, traveling to surf, and, maybe especially, surfing really warm waters for most of my life has influenced my music.
So have musicians like Gabby Pahinui, Kui Lee, Jerry Santos, Martin Denny, Bob Dylan, Michael Franks and James Taylor.
So have the writers like Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, C.S. Lewis, John D. MacDonald, Clive Cussler and J.R.R. Tolkein.
And so have watermen like Rabbit and Jamma Kekai, Don Lipton, Donald Takayama, Billy Hamilton, Tiger Espere, Paul Strauch, Mike Doyle, Steve Walden, Gerry Lopez, BK, Steve Oberg, Ryan Dotson, Cheer Critchlow and, yes, even Corky Carroll!
I play guitar and ukelele and, as I mentioned, having spent a good deal of my life under the banyan trees in Waikiki, I do tend to "talk story" between songs ... sometimes even between verses!
I think I'm pretty approachable so if you ever make it to a show, come up and say "hi"!
I'd love it, too, if you'd go to the Contact Page and find out how you can book me for a house concert.
Thanks and Aloha, Rob
